What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Anaysis (ABA) is the leading, scientifically backed approach to teaching children with autism and related disorders. ABA therapy focuses on teaching skills that are significant to your child and family. Goals are individualized based on thorough assessments, as well as child and family priorities, and may include communication, self-help, academic, play, self-regulation, and social skills. Data is collected and analyzed on negative behaviors that are interfering with a child’s development to determine the function, or why the child is engaging in the negative behavior(s). This information helps us to teach the child more appropriate ways to get their needs and wants met.

What will it look like?

It will look like fun! The first step is always to “pair” with your child. This involves interaction and play so they become comfortable with us and we learn about their personality and favorite things to do. When they are excited to see us arrive, it provides the perfect opportunity to begin to assess, determine strengths and weaknesses, and teach skills using evidence-based ABA strategies such as positive reinforcement.
